Standing alongside Antonio Panizzi and Charles Cutter, Lubetzky is considered one of the foremost contributors to the field of cataloging, particularly for his approach to catalog code design. Gathered together for the first time in one volume is a collection of Lubetzky's works. Among those included is his first published paper, "Crisis in the Catalog," and his three major works: Principles of Cataloging, Code of Cataloging Rules, and Cataloging Rules and Principles. Editors Svenonius (Sch. of Information Studies, UCLA) and McGarry (UCLA Library) have presented the selections in chronological order so that the reader might follow the development of Lubetzky's thoughts from his "writings on cataloging problems in the late thirties and forties through his writings reflecting his maturing thought in the fifties and sixties, to his writings in the following decades that consolidate and reiterate his philosophical and methodological stances." A brief introduction precedes each selection, establishing its context and primary points. A chronological bibliography of Lubetzky's works is included.
